Dap Offers Free Legal Services To Those Probed For Criticising Pn Govt
DAP has offered the services of its legal team for free to defend in court anyone who was charged for criticising the Perikatan Nasional (PN) government over its handling of the Covid-19 pandemic.
“The DAP national legal team, as well as all state legal teams, will offer free legal service to defend in court those victimised for criticising the PN government incompetence, for exposing double standards in complying with movement control order (MCO) restrictions, or businesses unfairly summonsed due to policy confusion and U-turns between ministries,” said DAP secretary-general Lim Guan Eng (above) in a statement today.
He gave the example of the confusion and U-turns involving the requirement of a permit from the International Trade and Industry Ministry (Miti) to operate a business under the current total lockdown.
Initially, Miti was the sole authority in charge of approving the permits, before the National Security Council revoked that approval and suddenly reverted back to Miti within 24 hours, Lim said.
There were also issues with the hotlines and website being unable to handle so many applications, he added.
This is reminiscent of the difficulties people faced during the online registration for the AstraZeneca vaccines, Lim said, despite spending RM70 million on computer hardware and software support.
He said DAP will also defend those who were victimised for criticising the double standards in implementing the MCO.
Businessperson Danny Ng
Lim pointed to a businessperson from Bentong who is facing police investigations after criticising MCA’s Deputy National Unity Minister Ti Lian Ker.
Businessperson Danny Ng had rapped Ti over problems faced by funeral home business owners who were not allowed to operate during the start of the two-week lockdown period because they had not received approval from Miti.
Lim then said DAP is also willing to offer any legal assistance required to the woman who took photos of the Kedah menteri besar and his two aides in what appeared to be a test drive on June 5 in Juru Auto City, an activity forbidden under MCO lockdown rules.
“Even though DAP is focusing on supporting the National Immunisation Programme (NIP) by helping the rakyat to register or facilitate a swift and smooth vaccination, we are concerned at the increasing number of complaints from the ordinary rakyat over the alleged arbitrary or unfair issuance of such compounds.
“Those willing to go to court or requiring legal assistance can contact our DAP state leaders or elected representatives,” Lim said. - Mkini
