Police say they are also probing the ‘fun ride’ programme officiated by housing and local government minister Zuraida Kamaruddin last Saturday. (Facebook pic)PETALING JAYA: Police have opened an investigation into alleged breaches of Covid-19 standard operating procedures (SOPs) by prominent individuals, including politicians and ministers, who attended a wedding recently.
Sepang police chief Wan Kamarul Azran Wan Yusof said they initiated the probe yesterday following a report filed by MUDA at the Dang Wangi police station on March 16.
The report had alleged that several ministers had breached movement control order (MCO) rules by travelling interstate to attend the wedding reception of the daughter of Jelebu MP Jalaluddin Alias in Seremban, Negeri Sembilan, on March 14.
Wan Kamarul said the investigation is being conducted by Sepang police as the report by Mutalib Uthman, a co-founder of MUDA, had mentioned that he found out about the claims when he was in Sepang.
He also said the police will be probing a “fun ride” programme involving housing and local government minister Zuraida Kamaruddin and another event attended by federal territories minister Annuar Musa.
“We have yet to reach the stage where we need to summon them (to give their statements) because the probe is still at an early stage of the inquiry papers.
“We will mobilise our investigators to record the statements of the organisers of the events from the various locations, including Seremban and Kuala Lumpur,” he told FMT.
Wan Kamarul said he was confident that they would be able to obtain sufficient information from the events’ organisers to complete the inquiry papers before handing them over to the Selangor police headquarters and Bukit Aman for further action.
“We have to be careful in handling these cases because it involves prominent individuals, politicians and ministers. This is to avoid causing any misunderstanding and further problems later on,” he said.
Among those alleged to have breached SOPs to attend the wedding in Seremban were Annuar, finance minister Tengku Zafrul Aziz, science, technology and innovation minister Khairy Jamaluddin, and higher education minister Noraini Ahmad.
It was previously reported that the National Landscape Department had denied claims Zuraida had breached Covid-19 rules during the cycling event last Saturday. - FMT
