Cops Summon Pro Bajau Laut Activist Mukmin Nantang

Borneo Komrad founder Mukmin Nantang was arrested by Sabah police and investigated for sedition on June 27 last year.
PETALING JAYA: Borneo Komrad founder Mukmin Nantang has been summoned to the Semporna police headquarters in Sabah tomorrow to be investigated under Section 233 of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998.
The activist, who had previously highlighted the plight of the indigenous Bajau Laut community, said in an Instagram post tonight that this was “intimidation” by the authorities against his work.
“Is this intimidation by the authorities because of my fight to prove and inform (the public of) wrongdoing by enforcers in the demolition of Bajau Laut homes?
“How many times do you want to investigate and arrest me? Why have I not been called to court until now?” he said.
Section 233 of the CMA criminalises online content that is “obscene, indecent, false, menacing or offensive in character with intent to annoy, abuse, threaten or harass another person”.
Acting Semporna police chief Arif Abdul Razak confirmed that Mukmin had been summoned.
Mukmin was arrested by Sabah police and investigated for sedition on June 27 last year.
Two days earlier, Sabah police said they would question him in connection with videos depicting the demolition of Bajau Laut homes.
The eviction of the Bajau Laut community in Semporna earlier that month saw their stilt homes torn down in an operation that apparently targeted those living on seven islands in the region, including Pulau Bohey Dulang, Pulau Maiga, Pulau Bodgaya, Pulau Sebangkat and Pulau Sibuan. - FMT
