Johor police chief Datuk Ayob Khan Mydin Pitchay said the arrests were made following a series of raids in Johor Baru and Kulai on Aug 8.
"The raids were carried out by a team from the Bukit Aman and state Narcotics Criminal Investigation Department in a special operation.
"In the first raid, we arrested two men aged 36 and 48 who both tested positive for drug abuse. Following the raid, we conducted five more raids and arrested four men and a woman aged between 28 and 45.
"Acting on information, we conducted another raid and arrested three more suspects aged between 26 and 28," said Ayob Khan in a press conference at the state police headquarters, here.
He said during the raids, police also seized 175.65 kilogrammes of marijuana valued at RM443,163.63.
"We also seized two lorries which had been modified, six cars, two motorcycles, various jewellery and RM45,550 in cash. We also sealed a bank account with RM6,972.22 in it," said Ayob Khan.
He said the syndicate's modus operandi is to use the modified lorries to get the drugs from Kelantan and transport them to Johor Baru.
"The syndicate had applied for approval letters for inter-state travel as they also carried frozen food in the lorries as cover. The syndicate has been active since Dec 2019," said Ayob Khan.
He said the case is being investigated under Section 39B of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952 and the suspects have been remanded for 14 days beginning Aug 9. - NST
