Chuah Rep Withdraws From Too Crowded Pkr Veep Race
Chuah assemblyperson Michael Yek Diew Ching who had thrown in his name as a candidate for the PKR vice-presidency election has withdrawn from the race last night.
When contacted, Yek confirmed the matter with Malaysiakini, saying that there are “too many contesting” for the position.
“It's too crowded. Many people are contesting for the four vice-president positions.
“So, I withdraw,” he said.
Yek (above) is the only candidate to have withdrawn from contesting for the vice-presidency in the party election, which will be held this May.
As of last night, there have been 17 individuals who have announced their candidacy for the vice-president position.
Among them are Selangor Menteri Besar Amirudin Shari and Negeri Sembilan Menteri Besar Aminuddin Harun.
Other candidates include incumbent Chang Lih Kang, communications director Fahmi Fadzil, PKR women’s wing chief Fuziah Salleh, organising secretary Nik Nazmi Nik Ahmad and former Perak PKR chairperson Farhash Wafa Salvador Rizal Mubarak.
Also in the running are former Perak PKR deputy chairperson MA Tinagaran, Kapar MP Abdullah Sani Abdul Hamid, Alor Setar MP Chan Ming Kai, deputy information chief G Manivanan and Sentosa assemblyperson G Gunaraj.
Terengganu PKR chairperson Azan Ismail, former vice-president Mustaffa Kamil Ayub, PKR Youth vice-chief S Thiban and Bukit Selambau assemblyperson R Summugam are also contesting for the post.
“Aside from there being too many (candidates), I also decided to withdraw on the basis of unity.
“This party election will strengthen the party again and bring unity,” added Yek.
PKR election this May will involve about 1.2 million members with the voting being a hybrid of physical voting and online voting.
This is the party’s first election since it underwent the infamous Sheraton Move which saw the fall of PKR and its allies in the Pakatan Harapan government.
