Carbon Trading To Be Part Of Sarawak New Green Economy Bill
Sarawak will table a bill on its "new economy", which will include carbon trading and land matters.
Sarawak Premier Abang Johari Openg announced this yesterday during the Sarawak United People’s Party (SUPP) Special Convention in Kuching, Sarawak.
He said the new bill will be tabled in November and will see expected revenue flow by 2030.
“I will be issuing a law, and this will protect Sarawak’s interests through the new economy. This is a source, and our efforts are a step towards developing green energy in Sarawak,” he said, according to Borneo Post.
He said plans include harnessing rivers as a means of generating energy.
“This, in turn, will become a new source of revenue for Sarawak,” he added.
Reporters sought an elaboration following his speech, but Abang Johari (above) declined to reveal details because the bill was still being drafted.
“We will be introducing a new bill that is related to the new economy, including matters regarding carbon and Sarawak’s rights over carbon trading and land rights under the state’s Land Code,” he said.
Meanwhile, he said Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS) will field candidates in all 82 seats in the next state election, which must be held by April 15, 2027.
Abang Johari said there were no negotiations with the alliance backing Anwar Ibrahim as prime minister over an electoral pact for the Sarawak elections.
“We will still contest all 82 seats, just as in the previous state elections,” he said. - Mkini
