Cabinet Members Usher In Cny With Festive Yee Sang Toss
Cabinet members kicked off the Chinese New Year celebrations earlier today with a lively “yee sang” tossing session after their final meeting before the holidays next week.
A series of videos released by Transport Minister Anthony Loke’s office shows several of his colleagues cheerfully taking part in the tradition, exchanging Chinese New Year greetings such as Xin Nian Kuai Le (Happy New Year), Wan Shi Ru Yi (May all go well), Gong Xi Fa Cai (Wishing you prosperity), and the Hokkien phrases “Heng ah, Ong ah, Huat ah” (symbolising prosperity, luck, and fortune).
The videos also feature Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim, Deputy Prime Minister Ahmad Zahid Hamidi, Agriculture and Food Security Minister Mohamad Sabu, Housing and Local Government Minister Nga Kor Ming, Human Resources Minister Steven Sim, Science and Technology Minister Chang Lih Kang, and Foreign Minister Mohamad Hasan, among others.
In addition, Loke recorded a special message wishing the Chinese community a prosperous New Year.
The DAP secretary-general highlighted the Madani government’s commitment to preserving Malaysia’s multiculturalism and diversity.
Transport Minister Anthony Loke“Today marks the last cabinet meeting before the Chinese New Year. As in previous years, we invited all ministers to take part in the ‘yee sang’ tossing tradition after the meeting.
“I hope to continue bringing this Chinese Malaysian tradition into the cabinet each year. Our cabinet represents a rich tapestry of backgrounds and ethnicities, and I hope we will always uphold and celebrate Malaysia’s multicultural identity,” he said.
“Yee sang”, a signature dish for the Chinese New Year among Chinese Malaysians, features a vibrant mix of ingredients that symbolise prosperity and good fortune.
In a podcast with former Umno leaders Khairy Jamaluddin and Shahril Hamdan last April, Loke noted that his grandfather, a restaurateur, was one of the pioneers who helped popularise this cultural tradition.
