Kk Mart Outlet In Um Splashed With Red Paint
Red paint was splashed on the facade of the KK Mart outlet in Universiti Malaya.
PETALING JAYA: The Universiti Malaya Association of New Youth (Umany) has condemned the recent splashing of red paint on the doors of a KK Mart outlet in the campus, and called on the university’s administration to probe the matter.
In a statement this evening, Umany president Lim Jing Jet said it was not clear whether the incident was connected with the recent chicken ham sandwich controversy, but nevertheless denounced the action as being extreme.
“While it remains unclear whether this act of vandalism is related to that controversy, if anyone wishes to protest against KK Mart, such extreme actions are not an appropriate means of expression.
“Vandalising property may seem like a minor offence, but can still fall under destruction of property as outlined in Section 425 of the Penal Code,” he said.
Lim said the incident raised serious concerns about campus security, and called on the university to take more concrete measures to enhance security, including installing more surveillance cameras and increasing patrols.
FMT has reached out to the police and UM’s management for comment.
The KK Mart outlet was recently embroiled in controversy surrounding the sale of pre-packed chicken ham and cheese sandwiches with allegedly misused halal logos.
The Islamic development department (Jakim) has confirmed that the meat used in the sandwiches was certified halal but the sandwiches, along with the company producing them, were not halal-certified.
KK Mart has also suspended all business dealings with the supplier of the pre-packed chicken ham and cheese sandwich, and halted the supply of the product by Shake and Bake Café to all outlets. - FMT
