Cabinet Allows Spm A Grades For Matriculation Placement
The cabinet today announced that all students who scored 10As and above, including A-, in the 2024 SPM examinations will receive places in matriculation programmes regardless of their racial background.
ADS“This is in line with Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim’s announcement last year,” the Education Ministry said in a statement today.
The ministry stated that the decision was made to ensure that all SPM students who scored 10As will have a chance to enter the matriculation programme.
It stressed that the decision would not affect the existing quota reserved for bumiputera students.
“The Madani government will continue to ensure that access to education will be enhanced for students, who are our nation’s future assets, the ministry said.
‘Excellence or quotas?’
On May 15, Education Minister Fadhlina Sidek came under fire from MIC after it was found that the ministry had classified A and A- in SPM grades as below excellent.
MIC senator C Sivaraj cited official information on the new criteria that purportedly stipulates that only students who achieve at least 10As, consisting exclusively of A+ and A grades, qualify for automatic admission into government matriculation colleges.

C Sivaraj“This means students who obtain nine As, or 10As, including the A- grade, are no longer considered outstanding (cemerlang) for this purpose.
“We must ask ourselves, do we want to recognise student excellence or merely fulfil certain quotas?” he asked.
Echoing Sivaraj’s sentiment, MCA vice-president Wee Jeck Seng urged the ministry to reverse the decision, saying that students deserve a clear, consistent, and fair policy.
“What Malaysians want is a government that can be trusted, not one that changes the rules without proper explanation or consultation,” he added. - Mkini
