Burger Chain S Ex Coo Remanded For Sedition Probe
Police have arrested and secured remand orders against two people today over their social media posts on X, including the former chief operating officer of myBurgerLab, Andrew Chong.
In a statement today, Bukit Aman CID director M Kumar Muthuvelu said Chong is being remanded for two days starting today to facilitate investigations under Section 4(1) of the Sedition Act 1948.
The investigation being conducted by the federal police headquarters’ Classified Crimes Unit also involves Section 505(b) of the Penal Code (statements conducing to public mischief) and Section 233 of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998 (abuse of network services and facilities).
Kumar’s statement did not name Chong but identified him by his social media handle.
In his now-deleted post on Aug 21, Chong criticised the Terengganu government’s move to impose a fine on Muslim men who skip Friday prayers without a valid reason.
“Wow… Slowly but surely, if Malaysia is taken over by extremism, we will become Iran after the revolution, ie, what you see today, and that should scare everyone,” he said.
Chong has since apologised following backlash that accused him of disrespecting Islamic values. MyBurgerLab company said it has terminated his employment and all affiliations with the company, effective Aug 22.
Meanwhile, Kumar said the Classified Crimes Unit has also secured a four-day remand order against a 43-year-old, allegedly for a post on X regarding an Israeli “attack” on the prime minister’s residence.
The case is being investigated under Sections 505(b) and 506 of the Penal Code, as well as Section 233 of the Communications and Multimedia Act. Section 506 of the Penal Code deals with criminal intimidation.
“Therefore, the police are warning that stern action will be taken without compromise against anyone who deliberately creates or disseminates statements that have a seditious tendency, criminal intimidation, or may cause public alarm and disrupt harmony in Malaysia,” Kumar said. - Mkini
