Bersatu Expected To Keep Muhyiddin As President Wan Saiful
The Bersatu supreme council at its meeting this evening is expected to retain party president Muhyiddin Yassin in his position amid ongoing corruption charges, according to a party leader.
Supreme council member Wan Saiful Wan Jan said a motion on the matter will be brought at the Bersatu central body’s Annual General Assembly tomorrow.
“As of now, we’re unanimous in wanting Tan Sri (Muhyiddin) to remain as president,” Wan Saiful (above) told reporters when met after the 4th Bersatu Youth AGM in Kuala Lumpur today.
Wan Saiful, who resigned as Bersatu information chief after being charged with two counts of corruption, said his appointed position was unlike Muhyiddin’s elected role.
“I was appointed as the information chief, so I felt I have a duty to step down.
“But Tan Sri is a leader elected by the members and they are demanding that he remains,” he said.
Similarly, Wan Saiful said Muhyiddin is also expected to remain as Perikatan Nasional chairperson based on support from other component party leaders.
Earlier, Muhyiddin attended a meeting for Srikandi Muda - Bersatu’s wing for young women - as well as the closing of the Bersatu Youth AGM.
Muhyiddin yesterday claimed trial to four counts of abuse of power and two money laundering charges involving RM232.5 million.
He faces 20 years in jail and a fine five times the amount of gratification involved or RM10,000, whichever is higher, for the abuse of power charges.
He also said he will abide by the Bersatu supreme council’s decision on his president post. - Mkini
