Baffling That Grab Riders Have No Qualms Delivering Pork Noodles Yet This Rider Hesitates Over A Crate Of Beer

BAN alcohol at all government functions. Ban alcohol at weddings held outside school hours at Chinese school halls. Ban alcohol on all Malaysia Airlines (MAS) flights.
Alcoholic tipples are definitely the flavour of the month, especially with opposition parties using it as another tool to demonise non-Muslims and their chosen lifestyles.
It would appear that this message has filtered onto social media with commenters with an ultra-conservative outlook – along with the requisite cybertroopers – are getting on their collective high horses to call out the delivery of the demon alcohol by e-hail riders.
Posting on the Grab Riders Community Malaysia on Facebook, GrabFood rider Muhd Jemmin point blank refused to deliver an order, seeing that it was very obviously a crate of beer which is haram.

He confessed at not checking the order before accepting but immediately cancelled upon seeing it was alcoholic beverages when arriving at shop.
Deciding to wait for an alternate order, he thought he would wait to see if the next Grab rider was a Muslim to which he intended to voice his concerns about delivering this fire water. Alas, he was unable to do so as another delivery order had come in.
The post has since generated 1.9K likes, 1.3K comments and 48 shares, indicating that this topic resonates with many Malaysians.
On the bright side, there is this exemplary non-Muslim who claimed that he would abstain from ordering alcoholic beverages vias GrabFood out of respect for Muslim riders but would buy ‘over-the-counter’ himself
“If I see that the cashier is a Muslim, I won’t let him/her touch it (the beer). I’ll ensure that they just scan it and I pay using QR,” shared the commenter whose comment received all-round praises as evident from the 1,1K likes it received.

“I also always reprimand members who order alcoholic drinks using Grab,” he added.
However, the commenter is surely one in a million. The poster though was questioned over the selective application of the concept of what was considered haram.
Why zero in on alcoholic beverages only when most food from Chinese eateries are not halal. Beyond that, how about transporting ciggies or vape?

As rightly pointed out, this should only be an issue if the delivery rider was using a halal ID to transport non-halal items.

However, it would appear that there are those who are unclear of the concept who insist that non-halal ID was limited to food items.
It was claimed by one confused commenter that it did not cover the highly sinful, demon alcohol, hence further warning other riders NOT to get involved in its distribution.

Highlighting the hypocrisy was the observation that this discussion on halal and haram was being held by smokers!
Editor’s Note: The National Fatwa Council declared smoking as haram (forbidden) in 1995 because it is harmful.
A subsequent fatwa was issued in 2015 deeming electronic cigarettes and vaping as haram as well. This ruling is based on the religious principle that acts which cause harm to the body are prohibited.
Another commenter, perhaps, respecting this Grab rider’s personal choice contended that it was fine to cancel but there was no need to voice disapproval to other riders. If that was the case, better to erect a tent in front of the shop, he counselled.

No point admonishing a fellow Grab rider trying to earn an honest living who merely delivered the beer but did not consume it. Want to be offended, go see Malay night clubbers freely and happily imbibing it, teased another commenter.

What this little bout of self-righteous grumbling highlights is that non-Muslim lifestyle choices are being demonised and used to gain political mileage from the ultra-conservative and rightist demographic, painting a scenario as if Muslims are forced to work in haram situations.
One concerned netizen claimed that in Islam, there were 10 groups who are cursed for being involved in making, sale, consumption and distribution of alcohol.

To which it was asked isn’t a Grab rider then classified under one of these groups as he is being paid a wage derived, in part, from the distribution of alcohol?
