Awtar Singh Rebel Without A Cause Or Much Needed Madani Critic Voice Of Indian Grassroots
BRASH, loud and highly opiniated. That would capture the very essence of the outspoken former MIC Puchong division chief Awtar Singh.
Those who follow their politics online will likely have come across this individual in their news feeds or viewed a TikTok clip or three of Awtar slamming some political personality, usually linked to the MIC.
Further embellishing the legend is a post on Facebook by Teachr Nagen that seeks to introduce political newbies to this highly opiniated character who is described as “outspoken, unfiltered, unstoppable”.
The Awtar-approved post which offered a short background of the former MIC Selangor’s information chief highlighted that his outspoken views had led to his expulsion from his own party:
Awtar Singh is a Malaysian Indian community leader best known for his role as the former MIC Puchong Division chief. He was the then Subang Jaya Municipal Council councillor (2004-2007).
Active for years in grassroots work, especially among the Sikh and Indian communities in Puchong, he often spoke out on social issues, party matters and community welfare.
“His straightforward, outspoken style gained attention but also led to clashes with MIC leadership.
In April 2024, after criticising the party’s internal democracy, he was expelled. Later, in August 2024, MIC leadership allowed him to submit an appeal for re-instatement, showing that the door to his return was not fully closed.
In 2025, he made headlines again after apologising publicly to MCMC (Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission) for a viral video containing unverified claims.
Price to pay for being confrontational
The post went on to outline Awtar’s purported strengths and weaknesses. On the plus side, he is said to have a strong grassroots presence due to his community-cantered work.
The former MIC Puchong division chief is also perceived to be a politician who does not blindly toe the party line but one who is fearless at being hyper critical of his own political organisation.
However, being a constant thorn in the MIC’s side can backfire and lead to disciplinary problems within the party. Awtar’s expulsion from the MIC in 2024 for repeatedly overstepping boundaries highlights that being confrontational has its limitation.
His brashness in making public pronouncements had also landed him in hot soup, most notably when he had to apologise to MCMC chairman Tan Sri Muhammad Salim Fateh Din, and the commission for baseless claims he made on TikTok in April 2024.

Awtar’s combative style has made him very visible but the spotlight does not always shine positively as the MCMC apology highlights.
The Teachr Nagen post goes on to place Awtar alongside other MIC leaders by comparing their strengths and weaknesses, hence suggesting that not only is he planning an imminent return to MIC but is ready to challenge for a leadership position.
Nevertheless, Awtar’s hard-hitting views and brash approach did seem to have supporters as many comments indicate.

However, there were also detractors who thought that Awtar was a character full of hot air. Alluding to MIC’s proposed alliance with Perikatan Nasional (PN), it was even suggested that Awtar would be better suited as a PAS member.

At a glance, Awtar’s loud and even divisive tone is precisely the sort of character needed not just in the MIC but in Parliament in the quest to convey the many grouses of man-in-the-street Malaysians. Will he be reinstated in MIC and be given a chance to stand for elections?
If this post is any indication, it would seem that such is the direction Awtar is headed in. – Focus Malaysia
