Asyraf Bows Out As Umno Youth Chief Cites Failure To Woo Youths In Ge15
Umno Youth chief Asyraf Wajdi Dusuki will not be defending his post in the upcoming party elections.
Announcing the decision at the close of the Umno Youth annual general assembly (AGM) today, Asyraf (above) said his decision was motivated by his failure to secure youth votes for BN in the 15th general election.
"I can say it frankly as did (Umno deputy youth chief) Shahril (Hamdan). I apologise for all my mistakes and failure to lead you all.
"I have tried my best, to ensure that we win again. And I had sacrificed my all for Umno Youth.
"I have decided not to defend my position," he said in his closing remarks at the World Trade Centre Kuala Lumpur (WTCKL) today.
Asyraf said he had wanted to resign on the election night itself, but was stopped by Umno president Ahmad Zahid Hamidi and then-caretaker prime minister Ismail Sabri Yaakob.
Deputy Umno Youth chief Shahril HamdanEarlier, Asyraf's deputy Shahril - who was also Umno information chief prior to GE15 - had also apologised for failing to help the party win, but made no announcement of his plans to defend his post.
Shahril, however, resigned as Umno information chief soon after the general election. He is touted as a possible contender for the Umno Youth chief post.
If he does contest, one of his challengers would be Umno supreme council member, Arman Azha Abu Hanifah, who announced his candidacy for the Umno Youth top post today.
Both Asyraf and Shahril were elected as Umno Youth’s top two in 2018.
In the general election, Asyraf had failed to defend the Gerik seat for Umno during the election, losing to Perikatan Nasional (PN) by 1,377 votes in a three-cornered fight.
Meanwhile, Shahril had lost to former Malacca chief minister Adly Zahari in Alor Gajah by 890 votes in a three-cornered fight as well. - Mkini
