As Expected Bungling Ismail Sabri Tries To Stir Up Rome Statute U Turn In Parliament But Speaker Throws Out His Motion
DEWAN Rakyat Speaker Mohamad Ariff Md Yusof today rejected a Barisan Nasional motion to have the government explain its position in the Rome Statute issue in the House
The motion was tabled by opposition leader Ismail Sabri Yaakob (Bera-BN) after Question Time ended this morning
Ismail said the opposition welcomed the Pakatan Harapan government’s decision not to ratify the International Criminal Court (ICC) statute but wanted an explanation due to the importance of the issue
“The minister had given all sorts of answers about the matter. There are also various speculations, debates and confusion among the people.
“We think the government should explain its decision to cancel its ratification of the statute in the House.“The government should announce its decision in the Dewan Rakyat, to put it on record, as well as explain what impact the withdrawal has on Malaysia.“I hope the speaker can make a ruling (to that effect),” Ismail said.Ariff then asked Ismail under which Parliament regulation should he make such a ruling
“The issue has already been resolved. I reject the motion,” he told Ismail.Last week, Prime Minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad said Malaysia would not ratify the Rome Statute due to “political confusion” surrounding the issue
He said Malaysia, which acceded to the Rome Statute on March 4 with the instrument on accession deposited with the United Nations secretary-general the same day, could withdraw before June this year
Dr Mahathir said the issue had been used as a political tool by some to mislead the people into believing that Malay rights and the immunity of position of the King would be taken away
Foreign Minister Saifuddin Abdullah said the cabinet’s U-turn on the Rome Statute was due to fears of a coup triggered by behind-the-scenes players
“(There was a) possibility of the issue being manipulated, to the extent that people go to the streets, moved by the ‘deep state’ and certain apparatus,” he reportedly said
Deep state refers to a clandestine network entrenched inside the government bureaucracy and entities to control state policy behind the scenes
