Anwar Hits Out At Critics Of Govt S On Going Efforts Against Corruption

(NST) – Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim today took a swipe against quarters who politicise and criticise his federal administration’s all out efforts to eradicate corruption in the country.
The Prime Minister did not hold back when he said he found it ‘aneh’ (unusual) that there were still quarters who defended super rich individuals tainted with corruption charges just because they are old and that the alleged offences took place many years ago.
Anwar said this when he stressed the important role played by all segments in society including civil servants to save and elevate the dignity of the country.
“I find it weird why there are those who still defend someone (tainted with corruption cases) just because the person is old and the cases took place many years ago.
They however did not take into consideration the billions of ringgit that the person had allegedly made.
“A policeman with the rank of Sergeant accepted RM500 in bribes, villagers stealing motorcycles.. actions were taken against all of them be it if they are not well or admitted to hospital.
“However, the government is being accused of plotting revenge and is cruel when we initiate action against those involved in major corruption.. They asked why we did not consider the age of that person when action is being taken against the person,” said Anwar in his speech at the meeting the civil servants in the state here today.
Present were Melaka Chief Minister Datuk Seri Ab Rauf Yusoh, Chief Secretary to the Government Tan Sri Zuki Mohd Ali and Public Service Department director-general Datuk Seri Wan Ahmad Dahlan Abdul Aziz.
Those present during the event were among 36,300 civil servants in the state.
Anwar, in his speech, however did not explicitly reference any individual or groups when he addressed his critics.
Anwar, who is also the Finance Minister, nevertheless reminded all that the country’s debt has reached RM1.5 trillion which compelled the government to adopt prudent spending in its expenditure.
In the same speech, Anwar also recorded his appreciation to the authorities including the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) for going all out against those involved in corruption and abuse of power without fear and favour.
“I am proud and have faith with the enforcement bodies, be it MACC, the Inland Revenue Board and the country’s police force.
“They have performed their duties and responsibilities in a professional and strict manner against those who allegedly siphoned billions of ringgit of the country’s wealth,” said Anwar.
