In a Facebook post, Anwar said the airstrikes not only endangered civilian lives, but threatened to inflame an already fragile region.
“By targeting Qatar, a nation central to mediation and dialogue in the Middle East, Israel has shown utter contempt for peace and diplomacy.
“Such an assault is indefensible and intolerable,” he said.
Expressing Malaysia’s solidarity with Qatar, he also urged the international community to hold Israel accountable for its “outrageous” actions.
Last night, Israel’s military said it conducted a strike targeting senior Hamas leaders, killing six including top Hamas negotiator Khalil al-Hayya’s son and a Qatari security officer.
Britain, France and Germany have since condemned Israel’s airstrikes, with French President Emmanuel Macron calling them “unacceptable regardless of motive”.
PAS president Abdul Hadi Awang described the airstrikes as a war crime which he said must be opposed by the international community. He also expressed solidarity with Hamas.
“We call upon the Muslim nations, the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation member states and the international community to pressure Israel to cease its attacks,” he said in a statement. - FMT
