PUTRAJAYA: Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim has accepted an apology by Meta, the parent company of Facebook and Instagram, over its removal of several of his social media posts on the late Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh.
Government spokesman Fahmi Fadzil said the prime minister hoped that such incidents would not recur.
There must not be any double standards. Meta has to ensure that the prime minister receives the same treatment accorded to other state leaders, he told reporters here.
The government yesterday demanded an apology from Meta in a meeting with the company’s
The posts removed by Meta included one where Anwar paid tribute to Haniyeh after he was killed in Tehran, Iran, on July 31.
The Prime Minister’s Office contended that Meta’s actions were a form of discrimination, restricted freedom of speech and insulted the struggle of Palestinians for basic human rights.
Meanwhile, Fahmi said he was told by Meta yesterday that its content guidelines would be constantly updated in light of geopolitical developments.
He added that he had asked the company to share its latest guidelines with the Malaysian government from time to time.
The communications minister also said the proposal to develop a social media application specifically for Malaysians was not an immediate priority for the government due to the high costs.
We do not see it as a priority at this juncture, said Fahmi.
Last week, Fahmi said Putrajaya was considering developing the platform as some social media providers were profiting off Malaysians but have failed to ensure user safety.
He said Facebook was estimated to have earned US$600 million (RM2.7 billion) from Malaysia but lacked commitment to ensure that their platform was safe to use in Malaysia. - FMT
