Pmo Gives Meta Tongue Lashing Demands Apology Over Removal Of Pm S Posts
The Prime Minister’s Office (PMO) has given Meta representatives a tongue-lashing today over the removal of Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim’s posts on Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh.
It also made several demands from Meta, including an open apology.
The PMO said Meta promised to issue a press statement soon.
The meeting between the PMO and Meta representatives today was called after the government cried foul over Meta’s removal of Anwar’s posts condemning Ismail’s killing.
The removal was accompanied by a notice from Meta stating that the posts likely contained “symbols, praise, or support of people and organisations that we define as dangerous”.
Communications Minister Fahmi Fadzil and Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission chairperson Mohamad Salim Fateh Din were also present at the meeting between the PMO’s Media and Strategic Communications Division and Meta representatives.
The PMO said it conveyed “deep disappointment” towards Meta’s actions, calling it “discriminatory, unjust, and a blatant suppression of free expression”.
“We also emphasised that the removal of these posts has deeply impacted the people of Malaysia and the global community, who are well aware of the suffering of the Palestinian people and the atrocities committed by the Zionist Israeli regime, as recorded in history.
“The unilateral decision to censor content without considering the context of the posts clearly raises questions about the transparency of Meta’s content moderation policies,” it added.
Berita RTM livestream halted
In addition to the removal of Anwar’s social media posts, the PMO also raised the suspension of Berita RTM’s Facebook livestream of last night’s Free Palestine Rally attended by the prime minister.

Hamas blamed the killing on an Israeli raid, while the New York Times quoted sources in the Middle East and the US saying that the Hamas political bureau chief was killed by an Israeli bomb planted at the guesthouse months earlier.
