Agc Rubbishes Viral Posting Claiming It Found Najib S Src Trial Invalid
Najib Abdul Razak’s appeal to quash his conviction and sentencing in the RM42 million SRC International corruption case will still proceed before the Federal Court on Aug 15.
In a media statement today, the Attorney-General’s Chambers (AGC) dismissed as untrue a viral posting claiming that it has found the SRC trial against the former prime minister invalid.
It is responding to the recent widespread sharing of a posting on WhatsApp - which also showed a picture of Attorney-General Idrus Harun - with words claiming it found there had been mistakes in the trial proceedings.
“This department denies making such findings as alleged in the viral statement and emphasises that the news is not true at all and is false.
“The Federal Court has set Aug 15 to hear the appeal by Najib, whereby this department would attend as respondent/prosecution.
“This department will proceed with the appeal (by Najib) and await the Federal Court’s decision,” the AGC stressed.
The apex court has set 10 days in August (beginning Aug 15) to hear Najib’s final appeal to quash his guilty verdict as well as a sentence of 12 years in jail and an RM210 million fine.
This is over one count of abuse of power, three counts of criminal breach of trust (CBT), and three counts of money laundering linked to RM42 million from SRC.
On Dec 8 last year, the Court of Appeal dismissed Najib’s appeal to overturn the Kuala Lumpur High Court’s decision to find him guilty and impose the sentences.
Najib was first charged over the SRC case before the Kuala Lumpur Sessions Court in mid-2018. However, the matter was later transferred to the High Court for a full trial, with its verdict delivered in July 2020.
Previously a subsidiary of 1MDB, SRC later became fully owned by the Minister of Finance Incorporated.
Besides being a former prime minister, Najib also used to be finance minister, SRC’s adviser emeritus, and chairperson of 1MDB’s board of advisers. - Mkini
