Aerotrain Repeated Breakdowns Is This The Standard Of A Rm456m Project

MCA Youth has called for the Transport Ministry (MOT) to establish a dedicated committee to investigate the root cause of the frequent breakdowns of the Aerotrain at Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA).
This is following the malfunction of the newly upgraded aerotrain which KLIA had announced in a post uploaded to its X account yesterday (Aug 4) that had left travellers stranded.
“Since service resumed on July 1, the Aerotrain has experienced at least five breakdowns. These repeated disruptions within such a short period are deeply concerning,” MCA Youth secretary-general Saw Yee Fung stated.
“We urge the MOT to establish a dedicated committee to investigate the root cause of these issues and to determine whether they are due to shortcomings in the repair works or failures by the contractor.
“According to media reports, RM456 mil was allocated to upgrade and maintain the Aerotrain. After being out of service for 28 months, the train was relaunched on July 1 but multiple breakdowns within weeks of its return raise serious questions about the quality and reliability of the project. "
It is also worth mentioning that the relaunch took place while Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim was on an official visit to France, and on the same day, Transport Minister Anthony Loke publicly announced the train’s return to service only for it to break down shortly after due to a passenger allegedly obstructing the gate.
A second incident occurred on July 4 where Loke stated that the train was not at fault and attributed the issue to a malfunction in the tunnel’s drainage pump.
“Further breakdowns were reported on July 12 and again on Aug 4. Each malfunction inevitably disrupts Aerotrain operations, inconveniencing the public and requiring additional repairs. Will the MOT continue to cite the drainage pump as the explanation for every failure?” Saw questioned.
“The RM456 mil spent represents a significant investment of public funds and involves public interest. The MOT and relevant authorities must provide a clear, transparent report and introduce immediate corrective measures to prevent further incidents.
“KLIA serves as the main gateway for international visitors. Ongoing issues with the Aerotrain not only inconvenience passengers but also damage Malaysia’s image on the world stage.”
Saw stressed that there needs to be clarity on whether the recurring issues are due to system flaws, faulty components or human error.
“Regardless, to effectively address the problem and ensure passenger safety and public confidence in the Aerotrain, the MOT must act swiftly to identify and understand the root causes of these service interruptions,” she added. ‒ Focus Malaysia
