(Bernama pic)PETALING JAYA: An owner of an eco-friendly resort in Pahang has lodged a police report against a logging company for encroaching upon her land and polluting the nearby river.
Shariffa Sabrina Syed Akil, who is also the president of the Association for the Protection of the Natural Heritage of Malaysia (PEKA), said on Oct 27, she noticed the Sungai Kenoi at her resort Tanah Aina Fareena, Lentang, had been “polluted by the licensee’s construction activities”.
She lodged a police report on Oct 28 at the Bentong police station and filed an official complaint to the Pahang Forestry Department (JPNP).
“The resort is worried if the logging and the land clearing works are continued, it will result in landslides, just like what happened on the Karak Highway and Lentang Forest Reserve back in Nov 11, 2015,” she said in a statement today.
She urged the authorities to take immediate action.
Meanwhile, JPNP director Mohd Hizamri Mohd Yasin said the issue of “encroachment” actually referred to activities to build a road to the logging area located in the Bentong district.
He has ordered the logging company to clean up the road construction residue that was affecting Sungai Kenoi and had also issued a stop-work order for immediate re-evaluation.
“Currently we allow the licensee only to carry out mitigation work in Sungai Kenoi, and they started cleaning up work on Friday (Oct 30),” he said in a statement.
He said that the licence for logging had been approved by JPNP and work commenced on Oct 15. The licensee said that it was necessary to go across Sungai Kenoi with machinery because the wood needed to build the bridge was located in the licensed area. - FMT
