The statistics department carried out the study between March and December 2022 to identify issues faced by gig workers in the food and goods delivery services. It involved 6,657 respondents who work as p-hailing riders.
“The findings determined that 97.71% of p-hailing riders were youths between the ages of 15 and 30.
“About 40% of them are secondary school graduates having completed the Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia (SPM) examinations, the Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia Vokasional (SPMV) examinations or an equivalent,” it said in a statement.
At the same time, 74% of the p-hailing riders considered their job as their main source of income.
“About 27% of p-hailing riders earn between RM1,501 and RM2,499. Only 12% earn between RM2,500 and RM3,170,” it said.
In terms of social protection, only 72% of respondents contributed to the Social Security Organisation (Socso), while 22% contributed to the Employees Provident Fund (EPF).
It also found that more than 60% of the delivery riders do not have any savings while around 55% of them have no personal accident or life insurance policies.
Despite shortcoming in terms of wages and social safety nets, p-hailing remains attractive as many riders are still able to manage their daily expenses, in addition to the flexible work hours and not being bound by employment rules or contracts.
To ensure that the welfare of the workers are protected, the statistics department provided five key recommendations. They are as follows:
protecting their welfare under labour laws or relevant legislation, providing an avenue for the workers and company to manage conflict, improving social protection, providing and improving skills training, anddeveloping a database for p-hailing employee registration.- FMT
