(Facebook pic)PETALING JAYA: The call by a former aide to Muhyiddin Yassin for MACC to investigate the accounts of other political parties is proof that Bersatu is afraid that its records are being looked into, an Umno leader said.
Umno Supreme Council member Puad Zakarshi said it was only “reasonable” that an investigation was being carried out against Bersatu since the party, despite being relatively new, appeared to have a lot of money to spend during the recent general election campaign.
He also said there were allegations of wrongdoing by Bersatu leaders who served in the previous PN-led government.
Last week, MACC chief Azam Baki confirmed that Bersatu’s accounts had been frozen under the law against money laundering.
It is understood the action is linked to an investigation into alleged misappropriation of billions of ringgit meant for Covid-19 stimulus packages.
On Feb 3, Marzuki Mohamad, the former principal private secretary to Muhyiddin, called on MACC to also investigate the election expenditures of PKR and DAP, which he claimed ran to “hundreds of millions”.
Puad told FMT, Marzuki should not be pointing at others. “Muhyiddin himself said Bersatu was clean and rejected corruption. So face the probe like a gentleman,” he said.
Pakatan Harapan chairman Anwar Ibrahim has also said the coalition’s components were prepared for any investigation into their financial accounts.
Anwar said PH had always promptly sent its financial statements to be audited by the Registrar of Societies annually. - FMT
