3 Kl Marathon Runners Hurt In Hit And Run Accident

(Bernama pic)KUALA LUMPUR: Three runners in the KL Marathon were injured early this morning, one critically, after a car was said to have ploughed through safety barriers set up on the Middle Ring Road
A spokesperson for traffic police at Ampang Jaya told FMT that the three victims were taking part in the Kuala Lumpur Standard Chartered marathon
“One of the victims suffered critical injuries and the other two suffered light injuries,” he said
According to a Facebook posting by a Onizuka Rizuan, one of the victims was a colleague of his with PruBSN, who suffered injuries to his hip, head and hands, and would be undegoing surgery. He also appealed for eye-witnesses to the accident, which he called a “hit-and-run”
FMT is seeking confirmation from former sports minister Khairy Jamaluddin if the victim is his aide
The police spokesman said eye-witnesses had reported that the accident had happened on the Kuala Lumpur Middle Ring Road (MRR2) heading towards Gombak

(Facebook pic)He added that it was unclear if the driver had ploughed through the barricades, as there were areas under construction, and the participants may have been confused. The make and model of the car is also unknown at press time
Marathon organisers said this evening “we are offering assistance to those affected by this incident” and they were cooperating with the authorities. More information would be provided when it became available
Sports minister Syed Saddiq urged the authorities to “take swift action in finding the wrongdoer who broke through the safety barriers” and he also urged the organisers to assist the injured victims
The KL Marathon is an annual event held since 1989. More than 30,000 people took part in this year’s event, together with about 1,900 running tourists from 73 countries. - FMT
