KUCHING: Only three of the Covid-19 deaths in Sarawak had been of those who had completed their vaccination doses, but tested positive for Covid-19 less than 14 days after receiving their second dose.
Sarawak Health Director Datuk Dr Mohamed Sapian Mohamed said a person is considered to be fully vaccinated only after the 14th day of receiving their second vaccine dose.
The state has reported a total of 449 Covid-19 fatalities thus far, with 94.6 per cent (425 cases) with no history of Covid-19 immunisation and 21 cases with only the first dose when they were confirmed positive with the virus.
“This means Sarawak has not recorded any Covid-19 fatality among individuals who are fully vaccinated against Covid-19 as of Aug 8. This is one of the positive impacts due to the increased coverage of the Covid-19 National Immunisation programme in Sarawak,” he said in a statement today.
To date, Sarawak has achieved a high vaccination rate with 88.2 per cent of its 2.2 million eligible adult population receiving the first dose and 75.9 per cent having completed both doses.
Dr Sapian said there are about 11.8 per cent of the eligible recipients who have not received even one dose and they should come forward immediately to protect themselves and their families against Covid-19.
He said there was also a drop of Covid-19 cases requiring intensive monitoring and treatment at hospitals in the state following the increased vaccination rate in Sarawak.
The number of daily hospital admissions involving Covid-19 patients in Categories 3, 4 and 5 have decreased from an average of 9.1 cases per day last month to 5.5 cases per day this month.
Category 3 is when patients have pneumonia and require observation by healthcare workers while Category 4 is when patients require oxygen. Category 5 patients, meanwhile, are in critical condition and need ventilator support.
The state Health Department, he said, would like to emphasise that Covid-19 immunisation is safe and effective in reducing the risk of infection by the virus, including the Delta variant or other VOCs, but cannot completely prevent a person from being infected.
“A small number of people who have completed two doses could still get the virus, however with mild symptoms. They also have the potential to infect others, especially those who have a weak immune system.”
Hence, those who have been fully vaccinated are advised to continue wearing masks, practising physical distancing and follow all the Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs).
They should also immediately get tested if they are experiencing symptoms such as fever, cough, sore throat, difficulty breathing or body aches, diarrhoea and vomiting for unknown reasons. Nst
