The two Malaysians, Lim Chee Kong and Lim Chee Wei, were given the “Public Spirited Awards” by Singapore police for fending off a cleaver-wielding attacker who had attempted to murder a woman.
Chee Kong, a chef at a restaurant, had stepped out for a smoke break when he heard the woman screaming for help. He immediately ran up to the pair while shouting at the suspect to get him to stop.
“But then (he came towards me) like he was going to harm me, so I retreated and kept shouting,” said the 55-year-old.
Chee Wei was among workers from another nearby restaurant who came to help on hearing the commotion. They threw random items, such as chairs, rubbish bins and even signboards at the man in an attempt to distract and deter him.
Two air-conditioning service workers nearby grabbed ladders from their lorry to push back the suspect, while the owner and worker of another eatery tried to help by throwing more items at the man.
A waitress at a steamboat restaurant nearby, To Lee Kwee, went to seek help from the employees of a nearby hotel, who called the police.
The two Lims were hailed for their extraordinary bravery and quick-thinking in stepping forward even though they were fully aware that the man was armed, said Jeremy Ang, commander of the central police division.
The attacker, 46-year-old Cheng Guoyan, was charged on Saturday with attempted murder of the 41-year-old woman. - FMT
