He said the ministry and the state education department are preparing the customised modules to be used to train the teachers
Manyin said 2,687 primary schools teachers have been selected for the programme starting next January
Lecturers from the teachers’ training institute will conduct the training over two weeks, he said after the launch of the 54th Principal Education Management Conference here today
It will be a continuous exercise and those doubtful about their capabilities will be provided further training, he said
Manyin said teachers were not trained when the Dual Language Programme (DLP) was introduced by the government a few years ago. As a result, more than 50% of the teachers were using Bahasa Malaysia to teach Science and Mathematics
He said the education authorities have not received any “strong objections” from parents in regard to the teaching of Science and Mathematics in English in the state
However, the state education department and district education offices will conduct an engagement programme with parents if are any objections
On April 24, Education Minister Maszlee Malik announced that Sarawak will be the first state to implement the teaching and learning of the two subjects in English for primary schools
The decision was made following Prime Minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad’s announcement in March that the government had taken the middle-road approach to the teaching of the two subjects
Mahathir said the approach would allow schools to choose whether to teach the two subjects in English or Malay because some Malaysians supported the idea while others were opposed to it. - FMT
