(Bernama pic)PETALING JAYA: Higher education minister Zambry Abdul Kadir has ordered a public university to furnish a full report on an allegation that the head of a department under its medical faculty is a bankrupt.
“The ministry will not compromise on issues that involve the legitimacy (of the appointment) or any legal matters,” he said in a text message to FMT.
“I hope the university will prepare a complete report on the matter immediately.”
Zambry was asked to comment on a news report in which netizens questioned the appointment of the said individual to office in a public university despite being declared a bankrupt 10 years ago.
Questions about the academic’s status were raised on social media after the academic was interviewed by a news portal recently.
A search conducted with the insolvency department confirmed that the academic was declared a bankrupt in 2014 and remained undischarged as of Thursday.
On Saturday, a spokesman for the university said an investigation is being carried out and an announcement would be made today.
Several netizens also claimed they enrolled in a private medical university the academic had started some 10 years ago, which was later shut down, forcing the government to step in.
FMT is withholding the name of the institution and the academic pending an official response.
Two days ago, nephrologist Dr Rafidah Abdullah urged the public university to explain why it allowed the person to lead the said department.
Rafidah said the vice-chancellor of the university must explain the matter, especially since the government’s regulations bar bankrupts from being hired for the public services. - FMT
