Zahid Reassures Peaceful Dec 8 Rally

UMNO president Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi reiterates that no untoward incident will take place on December 8 anti-ICERD rally.

This is to quash 'worrying statements' issued by some leaders, including Kelantan mufti that the planned rally should be called off as to avoid certain quarters from using it as a 'backlash platform' to the November 26 temple riots in Subang Jaya.

Since a Malay fireman is now treated at IJN's intensive care unit after allegedly being beaten by the protesters, and the possibility that it would be turned into religious-and-racial demonstration, its better for it to be cancelled.

Zahid insists that the rally will go on. While Umno is getting the police cooperation to monitor it, and Prime Minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad has said that the rally 'can still happen', only a few political and NGO leaders have voiced their concern.

My take - Zahid and the organiser have nothing to do with the temple riots. The rally was planned few months ago when anti-ICERD sentiments were high. Putrajaya has said they will not ratify the UN-promoted convention but the Opposition is not fully convinced. Pas says there are other 'ways' for the government to endorse it.

Its true. Putrajaya only issued a statement - without the PM's signature - on it. By formality, it must be brought to Parliament and properly documented in the hansard. Its a major decision on our foreign policy, right?

No way that it would turn ugly. The police will be there to monitor. This is Umno's first ever rally since forming an Opposition team with Pas and others. When Bersih staged ugly rallies few years ago, and without proper permits, the anti-ICERD demonstration will be held under the Peaceful Public Rally law. Should it breaks the rules, the organisers will be held responsible.

Of couse they will not let it happen. Zahid too will not allowed Umno or the Opposition ally to pay a heavy price for it.

So, they deserve such a freedom, and in this FREE FOR ALL nation under Pakatan, one needs not be afraid to express his/her happiness or sadness to everything. You can even mock the King and get the biggest escape of your life!
