Yusoff And Mkini A Political Drama Disguised As Justice
Malaysiakini is once again amplifying an old narrative. The focus is on Yusoff Rawther, his acquittal in a drugs and weapons case, and the recycled suggestion of a political conspiracy.
The agenda is not subtle. It is carefully designed to smear Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim through association and innuendo.
Hanipa’s misplaced analogy
Former Pakatan Harapan MP Hanipa Maidin attempts to revive this narrative with a familiar frame – casting Yusoff as a “David” fighting a political “Goliath.” As a lawyer himself, Hanipa should know better.
The drug and weapons charges were separate. They were not part of any legal effort connected to Yusoff’s earlier claims against the prime minister. Yet, Hanipa insists on linking them, pushing a misleading narrative under the banner of justice.
Legal systems are not powered by emotion. They operate on facts and evidence. Yusoff’s previous claims were dismissed, and the court’s decision to acquit him in a separate matter does not retroactively validate those earlier accusations.
A lawyer’s letter, framed as a headline
Yusoff’s lawyer from the Law Practice of Rafique sent a letter to the inspector-general of police, questioning whether Anwar or his former aide Farhash Wafa Salvador had ever been investigated.
This letter, which could have been quietly submitted for clarification, has instead been used as fuel for headlines and outrage.
Legal representation is not supposed to be part of a public campaign. If the lawyer truly believes further investigation is needed, there are formal channels for that.
Turning every correspondence into a media tool only undermines the credibility of the legal process.
Hamzah adds fire
Bersatu’s deputy president, Hamzah Zainudin, has called on the public to rise and demand justice. His statement assumes a conspiracy against Yusoff and paints the case as a national scandal.

Opposition leader Hamzah ZainudinWhat Hamzah is doing is not advocacy for justice. It is political theatre. He is using a resolved criminal case to ignite distrust in the system, despite due process already occurring.
Respect the legal system or risk destroying it
As a lawyer, I do not defend political leaders. I defend the integrity of the process. If there is a legitimate cause for concern, the courts are open. File a suit. Submit a report. Challenge the facts with facts.
What we are witnessing is not a search for truth. It is a political performance designed to exploit public sentiment. This is not about protecting rights. It is about regaining political relevance.
The people of Malaysia deserve more than recycled drama dressed as justice. - Mkini
