You Still Have A Place In Umno Party Veep Tells Mps In Govt
Vice-president Khaled Nordin said Umno must become ‘a strong and united party’ again. (Bernama pic)PETALING JAYA: Khaled Nordin has called for Umno to close ranks, telling MPs who are still part of the Perikatan Nasional administration — which is on the brink of collapse — that they still have a place in the party.
The Umno vice-president said the party could not be divided, especially in view of the fact that the prime minister and the current government could no longer defend themselves.
“Umno must unite. To MPs in PN, you never lost your place in the party. Friendship must remain. Those who have differing views are not the enemy,” he said in a statement.
The PN government, he said, was merely a platform to help Umno contribute to the nation and the party backed it when it clearly benefited the country.
“But we rejected it the moment it failed and went off track.”
Khaled admitted that when the party retracted support for PN, the repercussions also affected Umno.
But right now, Umno’s focus is to play a role in resolving the national crisis, he said.
“And to do this, we need to strengthen our unity at all levels, be it among members, leaders or MPs. We must return to becoming a strong and united party.”
When Umno retracted support for the PN administration earlier this month, several of its MPs quit the government.
Shamsul Anuar Nasarah and Noraini Ahmad resigned as energy and natural resources minister, and higher education minister respectively.
Some remain in government, including deputy prime minister Ismail Sabri Yaakob, vaccination minister Khairy Jamaluddin, foreign minister Hishammuddin Hussein and health minister Dr Adham Baba. - FMT
