Langkawi police chief Shariman Ashari said the other person, a man, suffered from a “health issue” during the event but recovered.
“The woman remains unconscious in hospital,” he was reported as saying by Sinar Harian.
Separately, at the same event, a spectator fell from an unspecified height and suffered head injuries, Shariman said. The man was treated and discharged.
He said 120 officers and men have been deployed throughout the event to ensure the safety of participants and spectators.
The Ironman 70.3 Asia Pacific Championship Langkawi was held today, with the swimming leg held at Pantai Kok.
Participants are required to complete a 1.9km ocean swim, a 90km cycle ride and a 21km run.
Meanwhile, an Australian couple emerged victorious in the men’s and women’s categories of the Ironman contest, bagging their spots in the World Championships to be held in New Zealand in December 2024.
Josh Amberger, 34, came out triumphant in the men’s category by clocking three hours, 50 minutes and 47 seconds. His 32-year-old wife, Ashleigh Gentle, who was stung by jelly fish while swimming, completed her challenge in 4:10:17s.
A total of 19 professional men and nine professional women triathletes were flagged off at Pantai Kok at 7.05am today to compete in the event.
Amberger said this was his second win in the Asia Pacific Championships, having done so in the same meet in Cannes, France, in 2017. - FMT
