Melaka Tengah police chief Assistant Commissioner Christopher Patit said the body of a 69-year-old Chinese woman from Tampin, Negri Sembilan, was discovered by a resident at around 2pm when returning from Friday prayers in the nearby area before reporting it to the police.
According to him, a team of officers and members, including the forensic unit, then went to the location to conduct an investigation and found the victim's body fully dressed in a red T-shirt, black long sports pants, and sports shoes.
He said that an examination revealed minor injuries on the victim's head and cheek, but no identification was found except for RM45 in cash and a small book.
"There were no signs of struggle on the victim's hands and body, and the post-mortem conducted at Melaka Hospital last night found that the victim died due to drowning.
"As a result, at 11.08pm last night, the police received a phone call from Tampin Police Station, Negri Sembilan, informing that a man had come to report that the deceased was his wife," he said in a statement today.
He said the results of questioning the 77-year-old man involved provided a clear picture related to the deceased, including sending via WhatsApp the identity of the woman who he claimed to be his wife.
"The man claimed that his wife had undergone breast cancer surgery and left the house at 7am without his knowledge, without bringing any belongings or bags, and also left a brief note stating that she wanted to go to Kedah or Pahang with friends for sightseeing," he said.
He said his team requested the man to identify the body and claim for burial. - NST
