Why Thunderous Silence On Merpati Message Mp Asks Home Ministry
Iskandar Puteri MP Lim Kit Siang has questioned the Home Ministry's "thunderous silence" on the “Merpati” issue, which claimed that former premier Najib Abdul Razak has been accorded certain privileges in his incarceration.
In a statement, the DAP veteran also wondered whether the lack of response from the ministry meant that the allegations made in the anonymous social media message were true.
"Where is the Home Ministry's quick response team to the Merpati (pigeon) post, with regard to special treatment for Najib in prison, or is the post true?
"The social media post had been in circulation for the last two days and it is unlikely that the authorities are unaware of it," said Lim, adding that the ministry should know that 24 hours, let alone 48 hours, is a "very long time" to counter something in the social media era.
Former premier Najib Abdul RazakHe was referring to an anonymous message which claimed that Najib (codenamed Merpati) is being given preferential treatment in Kajang prison, where he is currently serving a 12-year sentence following his conviction in the SRC International case.
Among others, the message alleged that Najib’s cell in the Kajang Prison complex has been renovated and there are plans to move him to the Cheras Rehabilitation Hospital (CRH) to allow more access to visitors and VVIP facilities.
Come clean
PKR deputy president Rafizi Ramli and Amanah vice-president Mahfuz Omar have both asked the authorities to come clean on the matter, and this morning, the Prison Department confirmed that Najib is indeed being currently warded at CRH, upon referral by the Kuala Lumpur Hospital.
The former premier will be moved back to the Kajang prison once he is given medical clearance by the government's medical officers, added the department.
The department, however, did not respond to allegations of renovations at the Kajang Prison complex, while the Home Ministry is yet to respond to any claims in the Merpati message.
Lim further urged the Home Ministry to discuss the issue in today's cabinet meeting, if it is not countered via a press statement. - Mkini
