What S New In Nokia 8 Android 8 Oreo
Nokia finally roll-out Android’s latest flavor Oreo to its flagship Nokia 8 yesterday through Beta Labs. The beta build is specially for those willing to taste it a little bit earlier with the agreement that user has to accept possibility for some bugs and willing to report it to them for improvement. Nokia even put it a constant notification for the beta tested to report bugs or opinion and suggestion for their improvement.
I’ve tested it starting yesterday and I just like it. Nokia proved that they listened to their customer’s opinion and instead of providing the latest Oreo, some welcomed improvement or addition has been made. Here’s what I got…
1. Battery percentage on notification bar
When I reviewed the Nokia 5 and Nokia 8 recently I’ve been annoyed with the absent of battery percentage on my notification bar. Now in Oreo Nokia had added option in battery settings to enable the number in percentage next to the battery icon in the notification bar.
2. Night Light
This feature to give yellow tint to the display. Like Night Shift for iPhone, Blue Light Filter, Reading Mode, or whatever name you call it, this feature will make you feel more comfortable to use the phone in dark surrounding. It even provide health benefit to the users. On Nokia 8, you can also set schedule for this mode to turn on automatically as well as the intensity level.
3. Picture-in-picture
This is Oreo’s offering. You can now just press the home button while navigating in Google Maps, the navigation screen will be scale down to a floating window to keep guiding you. Google has made the API available to developers and we will see more apps supporting it. For now it is quite limited. VLC supported it but Google’s own Photos didn’t just yet.
4. Dot notification
Pure Android can now display small dot or badge on top of apps’s icon to notify user for something’s waiting in there.
5. Faster bootMy Nokia 8 now took only 20 seconds to boot up. Compare with previously almost 50 seconds.
6. Icon shape selector
Nokia’s Launcher 3 now hascapability to change the icon shape. However most of 3rd party apps’s icon won’t be affected.
7. Background activity manager
You can now add or remove apps from the white list. This feature can restrict apps from working in the background and will significantly improve the battery usage and RAM consumption.
That is all the good treat for us. But one thing I hope to see is more notification can be display by Glance. I want Whatsapp to be in there since the Nokia 8 does not have notification LED.
