Wee Derides Lim Over Car Project Using Public Funds

MCA has taken the finance minister to task over his assurance that no public funds would be used for the third national car project, but it has now been revealed that it will be funded by a government-linked corporation (GLC).
(The Star) – MCA president Datuk Seri Dr Wee Ka Siong said that the Pakatan Harapan government had announced that the third national car project would be spearheaded by a GLC.
This move, he added, was similar to using public funds. “Finance Minister Lim Guan Eng gave his assurance that the government would not use public funds for the third national car project.
Dr Wee also criticised the government for contradictions in what it preaches and what it does. “Pakatan had repeatedly emphasised that the treasury is empty, and yet it is adamant about going ahead with the third national car and the crooked bridge projects.
“What an irony! The population of Malaysia is not huge and the local automobile market is small,” he said.
Dr Wee said a newspaper report on Jan 20 quoted the Malaysian Industry-Government Group for High Technology chief executive officer Datuk Dr Mohd Yusoff Sulaiman, who announced that the company to spearhead the third national car project would be known during a National Development Council meeting on Jan 28.
“Two companies mentioned in the report were Sime Darby Auto Engineering and SilTerra Malaysia Sdn Bhd, which are both GLCs.
Founded in 1995 when Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad was the prime minister, Dr Wee said SilTerra is known to be a loss-making semiconductor manufacturer.
“Should SilTerra be given the green light to participate in this third national car project?
“Will DAP speak up? Or will it remain silent?” he added.
Dr Wee said Dr Mahathir should give priority to the development of the public transport system.
“If the third national car project is indeed developed with people’s money, what say you, Lim Guan Eng?” Dr Wee asked.
