Those ignoring the directive face being slapped with a RM1,000 compound, said state Local Government, Health and Housing Committee chairman Dr Izani Husin.
He said the directive was issued after the state National Security Council meeting here, today.
Dr Izani said the directive only applies for the time being to Kota Baru district, which is now a red zone due to a surge in coronavirus infections.
"Effective today, any public gathering, such as weddings and motorcycle convoys involving gathering in large numbers and for long periods, is not allowed in the town area.
"The state government, as well as the Health Department are worried, as public gatherings have been identified as the main cause for the coronavirus transmission in the state, and cases of Covid-19 among such groups are among the highest," he added.
"During our meeting today, the state police agreed to issue on-the-spot compounds to those who conduct public gatherings as well as those flouting other Covid-19 standard operating procedures (SOP).
"Police will act strictly, and there will be no more verbal warning to those who flout the SOP," he said when met after the state National Security Council's meeting here, today.
Dr Izani said members of the public must play their role by avoiding public gatherings, as well as remaining in their homes if they have no urgent errands to run.
"If possible, try not to continue with the normal approach of house-to-house visits, especially relatives' houses, as the state Health Department has detected that many Covid-19 cases spread among close relatives," he added. - NST
