In the latest twist to former premier Najib Abdul Razak's ceramah-turned-wrestling match, the owner of Restoran Amjal in Kuala Lumpur, where the former premier spoke this afternoon, claims to have been duped by the organiser
Speaking to Malaysiakini, the owner's daughter, who declined to be named, said the management was told that Najib would not be present during the programme
She also said the restaurant is known as a hub of the former opposition Pakatan Harapan, frequented by those involved in the Reformasi movement
“We asked the organiser several times – 'Will Najib be there?' They said, 'no'. But suddenly, Najib showed up this afternoon,” she added
The ceramah was marred by an altercation between Najib's supporters and a group of Universiti Malaya students, which took place across the road
The supporters had confronted the students who were carrying placards critical of Najib and during the exchange, a man had grabbed UM Association of New Youth (Umany) president Wong Yan Ke by the neck and attempted to drag him across the railing
Najib later told Malaysiakini that Umno did not know who the man was in response to reports identifying the individual as one of his supporters
“He is not a party member nor was he involved in the ceramah. He, according to what I was told, was a passer-by who decided to join in when the fracas happened,” said the former premier
Earlier, Najib, who had expressed regret over the incident, said the students should not have staged the protest
Umno has also lodged a police report, accusing the students of provocation
At the time of writing, the students are still at the Pantai Dalam police station where their statements are being recorded. - Mkini
