We Ve Tried Our Best Anwar Says On First Year In Power
Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim’s government marks its first year in power tomorrow. (Bernama pic)PUTRAJAYA: Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim today said his Cabinet had “tried its best” during its first year in power, ahead of the one-year anniversary of his coalition government tomorrow.
Anwar, who was sworn in as prime minister last November, was asked by reporters whether he was satisfied with his Cabinet’s performance.
“The whole team has tried its best, and God willing, we will improve,” he said when met at a thanksgiving ceremony to mark the government’s anniversary here.
Anwar, the Pakatan Harapan (PH) chairman, took his oath of office on Nov 24, 2022, five days after the 15th general election which ended in a hung Parliament.
His PH coalition joined forces with Barisan Nasional (BN), Gabungan Parti Sarawak and Gabungan Rakyat Sabah to form a unity government with the support of MPs from Warisan, Parti Bangsa Malaysia and the independent bloc.
When asked if a January Cabinet reshuffle was on the cards, Anwar only smiled.
It was reported last month that representatives from BN component parties MCA and MIC might be made ministers in a Cabinet reshuffle which was to have taken place after the Pelangai by-election on Oct 7.
Speculation of a Cabinet reshuffle intensified after the civil service heads of five ministries were moved to new positions last Monday, with Anwar saying last Friday that he was “thinking” about a reshuffle.
At the event today, Anwar voiced hope that his administration would remain stable for another four years without any challenges from his political opponents.
The Tambun MP also expressed confidence about boosting Malaysia’s stature in the region within the next two or three years.
“God willing, (the government is) politically stable. Let’s pray that for the next four years until the next election, there will be no disturbances,” he said in his speech.
He also emphasised a commitment to fighting corruption, saying he had not taken up his position to amass wealth.
Instead, he said he considered it an opportunity to serve the public to the best of his abilities. - FMT
