An audio clip that purportedly showed Bersatu chairperson Dr Mahathir Mohamad agreeing to withdraw the party from Pakatan Harapan is fake, said Bersatu Youth chief Syed Saddiq Syed Abdul Rahman
He affirmed that an earlier clip where Mahathir is purported to have pleaded with Bersatu leaders not to force him to renege on his promises is what actually transpired during Bersatu’s supreme council meeting on February 23
“This is a blatant lie. I was at the meeting. Mahathir pleaded three times to not leave Harapan
“On the final time he pleaded, he said, ‘Don’t force me to go against my principles’
“I suggest the supreme council disclose the full audio recording which will prove how Mahathir pleaded to not leave,” he said
Marzuki Yahya, who was at the meeting as secretary-general, told Malaysiakini the latest clip had been edited but did not elaborate
Meanwhile, Bersatu supreme council member Tariq Ismail Mustafa said the clip is a desperate move by those behind the Sheraton Move in late February to shore up its legitimacy and sour relations between Mahathir and Pakatan Harapan
“Curiously, although I’m one of the supreme council members present at the emergency meeting on February 23, I do not recall a decision to withdraw from Harapan being made
“In fact, the motion to withdraw from Harapan to join forces with Muafakat Nasional ended with the resolution to leave the final decision to Mahathir, after he has evaluated and considered the motion,” he said in a statement today
To a question, he told Malaysiakini that Mahathir had never criticised DAP nor PKR president Anwar Ibrahim during the meeting and only asked to be allowed to fulfil his promise to step down before his term as prime minister ends
“And he did not agree to cooperate with Umno because they will use this as leverage so that the court would not take action against them,” he said
Earlier today, a clip was purportedly leaked from Bersatu’s supreme council on February 23, which depicted Bersatu leaders agreeing to a motion to leave Harapan that day
“If you want it today, okay. Today we leave Pakatan Harapan,” a voice resembling that of Mahathir is heard saying
The voice is also heard saying that support from Umno is “fickle”, but this is no different from DAP or PKR
“I want to know whether we are leaving now or we give it a little more time
“Because to me, support from Umno is so fickle that if given a little time, they will like me
“There is no difference. It’s just that I don’t like DAP, I don’t like Anwar, and the rest are like that, too
“It is all a matter of time, whether we decide the time or we act today,” the voice said
The clip has been circulated on social media platforms online, including by former prime minister Najib Abdul Razak. - Mkini
