Wan Junaidi Report On Pulau Batu Puteh Presented To Cabinet
The final report of the special task force reviewing laws relating to the sovereignty of Pulau Batu Puteh, Middle Rocks, and South Ledge has been presented to the cabinet.
Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department (Parliament and Law) Wan Junaidi Tuanku Jaafar (above) said the task force also submitted several recommendations for the government's consideration for the purpose of appropriate follow-up actions to be taken including legal aspects, the tort of misfeasance, and Malaysia-Singapore relations.
“The government has examined and finalised several next steps that will be implemented in order to restore the country's dignity and sovereignty in relation to Batu Puteh, Middle Rocks, and South Ledge, especially on the issue of maritime demarcation between Malaysia and Singapore,” he said in a statement.
Wan Junaidi added that the improvements proposed by the special task force through the report were transparent, neutral, and inclusive by considering the results of analysis, research and observations of its members.
He said the report was prepared by the task force over a period of nine months starting from Nov 9, 2021, until Aug 30, 2022.
The special task force was set up with objectives, among others, to investigate claims that there was a possible issue of misfeasance by Dr Mahathir Mohamad in 2018 when the Pakatan Harapan administration he led decided to withdraw Malaysia’s appeal in a review bid over the country’s sovereignty dispute with Singapore over Pulau Batu Puteh.
Putrajaya had filed an application in 2017 for a review of the International Court of Justice’s (ICJ) decision in 2008, which ruled that Singapore had sovereignty over Pulau Batu Puteh. - FMT
