A Home Elevated to 300 m² Above the Landscape
Rising from the verdant fields and gentle hills of Thailand’s Nakhon Ratchasima region, W House II by IDIN Architects redefines domestic architecture at 300 m² by lifting the volume above the ground, crafting not just a house, but an elevated experience of home. With the main living floor raised some seven metres above grade, the architecture both commands and tucks into its landscape—creating a symbiotic dialogue between built form and natural terrain.
The decision to lift the residence was motivated by the client’s desire for a single-storey dwelling where the whole family could remain in view of one another and active together throughout the day, while also preserving the open garden level for grazing cows and circulation. What emerges is a house of remarkable balance: structural boldness meets familial intimacy; panoramic views meet domestic calm.
Formal Approach & Material Clarity
In plan and section, the W House II presents a horizontally expansive rectangle elevated on two major concrete supporting walls—long-span structural elements that give the upper floor freedom and the ground level openness. The 300 m² of living area is wrapped in a double-skin façade: an inner glass envelope for transparency and connection, and an outer timber-slatted screen for shading, privacy and texture.
Materials are chosen with deliberation: raw board-marked concrete transitions from exterior to interior, maple timber surfaces bring warmth and grain, and green India stone in the kitchen introduces refined contrast. Combined, they form a restrained palette that allows the landscape and light to remain protagonists.
Spatial Flow, View & Family Life
The 300 m² program is arranged to embrace both togetherness and openness. With the elevated floor, the family gains panoramic views and a wrap-around balcony that encircles the volume—turning the house into a vantage point. At ground level, the garden flows beneath, creating a sense of lightness and freedom.
Inside, the living room, dining zone and kitchen merge into an open-plan space where interactions are natural and sightlines uninterrupted. Bedrooms and private areas are configured to maintain connection while offering retreat. The use of expansive glazing and strategic orientation ensures that light, breeze and nature permeate each space.
Sustainability, Climate Response & Future-Living
W House II is not only visually striking; it is ecologically thoughtful. Elevation on concrete walls lifts the living space above ground moisture, encourages airflow under the structure, and preserves the land below for vegetation and grazing—benefiting both building and landscape. The double-skin façade mitigates solar gain while maintaining openness.
Material longevity is woven into the design: concrete for durability; timber chosen for richness and resilience; stone for context and texture. The architecture thus aligns aesthetic ambition with environmental responsibility.
Why W House II Matters
In the realm of contemporary residential architecture, W House II stands out for its clarity of concept, refined materiality and execution at 300 m². It teaches us that homes can be elevated not just physically, but experientially. IDIN Architects have created a residence that is simultaneously:
bold and subtle
panoramic and intimate
architectural and familial
For those interested in modern Thai domestic architecture, elevated living typologies, and houses that merge form with site, W House II is a benchmark.
