University Hospital Raises Clinic Fees Admission Charges

Universiti Malaya Medical Centre’s general clinic consultation fees go up from RM5 to RM15, and specialist consultation fees from RM30 to RM80.
PETALING JAYA: Universiti Malaya Medical Centre (UMMC) has announced sharp rises in consultation, admission, and service charges, which now cost up to three times more.
The new fees came into effect on Jan 1 due to the rising costs of medical supplies and equipment, it said in a statement, according to the New Straits Times.
UMMC said its fees are still lower than those of private hospitals, while providing the latest technology and facilities.
General clinic consultation fees go up from RM5 to RM15, while follow-up specialist consultation fees go up from RM15 to RM50. Specialist consultation fees are up from RM30 to RM80; and ward admission in a single adult room goes up from RM120 to RM300.
Other new fees are RM270 for paediatric ward admission; RM500 for emergency ward admission for adults; RM650 for emergency ward admission for children; and RM700 for delivery room admission.
Advance payments for paediatric and ophthalmology services now cost RM1,500 for Malaysians, while surgical and orthopaedic services will require an advance payment of RM2,500.
The advance payment for intensive care wards has been set at RM5,000.
The increase was not aimed at profit maximisation, but at ensuring the hospital’s long-term stability and sustainability, UMMC said in a statement.
It said the fees were last revised in 2019. While government assistance remains its main source of funding, it was responsible for generating its own income, the hospital said.
UMMC said its costing method took into consideration all expenses, including equipment, labour, utilities, maintenance, raw materials, and other costs to ensure a “comprehensive calculation” of the services provided to patients.
It also said it will review fees at least once every five years unless there is a significant change in the costs of services offered to patients. - FMT
