Unity Ministry Fosters Harmony With High Impact Initiatives

KUALA LUMPUR: The national unity ministry has run nine high-impact programmes this year as part of its on-going effort to foster harmony.
Its minister Aaron Ago Dagang said the ministry will continue to incorporate the “Understand, Respect and Accept” concept in all its initiatives to ensure that the nation’s multiracial and multi-religious society celebrates its diversity.
He said among the programmes the ministry rolled out was the “Jejak Harmoni” initiative which saw the adherents of the various faiths gather together to interact and visit each others’ places of worship.
“This is among the initiatives we ran to promote greater understanding of the differences in each and every religion,” he told FMT.

Next year, the ministry intends to zoom in on producing advertisements for the various festivals, host a podcast on unity and set up a committee to manage issues related to unity.
Aaron said it will also produce a documentary on race relations and review the Community Tension Index (IKM) as well as continue its research on a module to foster unity in Peninsular Malaysia.
“We need to continuously promote unity by accepting and appreciating the differences we have. It’s one way to help Malaysia develop and preserve the harmony we enjoy,” he added.
On a related matter, Aaron said the Harmony Charter the ministry was drafting together with the Institute of Islamic Understanding Malaysia would be presented to the Cabinet in the near future.
The charter encompasses six principles, 12 values and 32 guidelines. The document will be drawn up to complement the Rukun Negara and Federal Constitution.
In March, Aaron said that the charter could serve as a guide for the establishment of a peaceful and harmonious nation, which would lead to Malaysia’s future prosperity. - FMT
