(Bernama pic)PETALING JAYA: Former deputy education minister Teo Nie Ching has criticised the Malaysian Examination Council (MPM)’s failure to provide a reason for postponing the Sijil Tinggi Persekolahan Malaysia (STPM) examination.
Describing it as being unfair to the candidates, Teo said: “This is the second time MPM has changed the exam dates (since 2020), and no explanations have been given by the education ministry and MPM for the postponement.
“It is not fair to the students as they are stressed out about the exam, even though the postponement of the exam date may give them more time to prepare.”
The Kulai MP told FMT that the lack of explanation reflected badly on both the ministry and MPM as it would indicate poor planning.
She was also concerned that there would be a delay in the announcement of the STPM results which would affect students applying to pursue higher education overseas.
“If the results are delayed, students who intend to further their studies abroad may miss the new semester intake for overseas universities, and they will have to wait another year,” she said.
MPM, in a statement released yesterday, said the exam schedule for the third semester of STPM, which was fixed for May 18, 19, 24, 25 and 26 had been postponed to May 25 and 26 and June 13, 14 and 15.
The exam schedule for the repeat of semester two which was fixed for June 13, 14, 15 and 16 has been postponed to June 16, 20, 21 and 22.
The council did not provide any reason for the postponement.
STPM 2020 was also delayed after it was pushed to the following year due to the Covid-19 pandemic. - FMT
