Underperforming Sarawak Reps Should See Undi18 As Threat Says Analyst

Sarawak’s GPS government, led by Abang Johari Openg (centre), says it is not worried about the Undi18 movement.PETALING JAYA: Sarawak’s elected representatives who have performed poorly this term should see the Undi18 initiative as a threat ahead of the 12th state election.
However, political analyst Jayum Jawan explained that Undi18 would not be the main factor in determining victory for any contesting party.
“The 12th state election should be held as soon as possible taking into account the health crisis. This is because the current state government has carried out its duties without a valid mandate,” he told FMT.
“Undi18 is not a determining factor in the victory of any party that will contest. Such analyses and views are inaccurate. However, the ruling party is said to be afraid of Undi18. This is probably because of their own poor performance as elected representatives and government.
Jayum Jawan.“Therefore, those who do not provide excellent service are afraid of losing. That’s the right sentiment. They should not be re-elected, not only by young voters aged 18 upwards but by all voters.”
Recently, Sarawak chief minister Abang Johari Openg dismissed allegations that the Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS) government wanted to hold the state election quickly to avoid the implementation of Undi18 by the end of the year.
Abang Johari said the government was not afraid of Undi18 as they were the ones who amended the state constitution to lower the minimum age requirement to vote from 21 to 18.
He acknowledged that GPS needed a fresh mandate from the people in line with democratic practices.- FMT
