Umno Youth Grassroots Dispute Leader S Claim Most Want Party Polls Delayed
Umno Youth division leaders have disputed a claim by wing secretary Hasmuni Hassan that 176 youth divisions want party polls held after the next general election (GE15).
Hasmuni claimed this motion was being moved by the majority of divisions in order to guarantee stability within Umno.
"This is to ensure party discipline and stability are protected and to give space to the leadership to focus on the agenda to help the people before returning the people's mandate to select a new government," he said in a statement yesterday.
However, several Umno Youth division leaders claim this does not represent the majority.
Kepong Umno Youth chief Mohd Hazreq Mohd Husin said that checks he did found that the claim of 176 divisions backing polls to be pushed back was inaccurate.
"If you do the math, I don't think it can be said that a majority (want post-GE party polls," he told Malaysiakini.
'We want to win GE15'
Likewise, Bukit Bintang Umno Youth chief Mohd Khairulnizam Mohd Isa said his division is not making such a motion.
Personally, he said the party polls should be held before GE15.
"We want to win GE15. We have to know what the people want, and the people want to see Umno's direction and who is the new team in Umno.
"Plus right now, people don't actually want a general election. They are comfortable with the government based on our surveys," Khairulnizam added.
Similar sentiments were also voiced by Simpang Renggam Umno Youth chief Mohd Faizal Mohd Said when contacted.
Umno was supposed to hold party elections in the middle of this year as the leadership's term was set to expire on June 30.
However, the supreme council decided to postpone elections by 18 months, with the new due date by Dec 29 next year.
Efforts by Umno president Ahmad Zahid Hamidi's faction to call for a snap GE soon, however, has triggered fresh calls for party polls to be held - in an effort to oust him.
A memorandum of understanding between Putrajaya and Pakatan Harapan stipulates that Parliament can't be dissolved before the end of July.
However, Zahid's faction says this agreement should be ignored. - Mkini
