Umno Supreme Council Will Meet To Decide Party Polls Date All Views Considered Says Sec Gen Ahmad Maslan

PETALING JAYA: Umno will hold a supreme council meeting to decide on the date for party polls with reference to the guidelines given by the National Security Council (NSC) and the Registrar of Societies (ROS), says Umno secretary-general Datuk Seri Ahmad Maslan.
When contacted Saturday (June 5), Ahmad said the Umno supreme council would also ensure that the Health Ministry's advice with regard to the Covid-19 pandemic is fully adhered to when making decisions whether to hold the party polls during the movement control order and state of Emergency.
However, he did not confirm if Umno had received any letter from NSC allegedly notifying that the party must postpone its pending party polls.
"The Umno supreme council will meet soon. We will then decide and announce the dates once we have decided.
"We will take into account the views of the NSC, ROS and the Health Ministry (when making the decision)," said Ahmad, who is also Pontian MP.
It was reported by some portals earlier that the NSC had allegedly asked Umno to postpone its party polls.
Umno, which has 3.35 million members as of March 26, was due to call party elections last year but this was postponed due to the Covid-19 pandemic, which saw a surge at the end of 2020 following the Sabah state elections.
The Umno general assembly was also postponed several times due to the pandemic.
According to Umno’s constitution, the supreme council has the prerogative to postpone party polls for up to 18 months from the date when the election is supposed to be held.
The Umno party polls are held every three years, with the last one held on June 30,2018. The current term for Umno’s office bearers is set to expire on June 30.
This time round, party polls have become a much-talked about issue as Umno president Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi is currently facing a series of 87 corruption charges in court. - Star
