Umno Leaders Discussed Plans For Ge15 Says Terengganu Party Chief
Among those present at last night’s meeting were party president Ahmad Zahid Hamidi, deputy president Mohamad Hasan and vice-presidents Ismail Sabri Yaakob, Mahdzir Khalid and Khaled Nordin.KUALA LUMPUR: The Umno Supreme Council meeting held last night, the first after former prime minister Najib Razak was incarcerated for corruption, apparently focused on preparations for the coming general election (GE15).
Among those present was Terengganu Umno chief Ahmad Said, who declined to give details of the meeting agenda.
Asked if they discussed GE15, he simply said “ya, ya”, but did not elaborate.
Pressed further on whether they discussed the jailing of Najib after his conviction and jail sentence in the SRC International case were upheld by the Federal Court, Ahmad said “no” and waved the reporters away.
However, Umno executive secretary Sumali Reduan said there was “no tension” during the meeting.
“Everything went smoothly and calmly,” he said, adding that those who spoke expressed their sympathies for Najib.
Umno president Ahmad Zahid Hamidi, deputy president Mohamad Hasan and vice-presidents Ismail Sabri Yaakob, Mahdzir Khalid and Khaled Nordin attended the meeting.
Also present were Selangor Umno chief Noh Omar and Perak Umno chief Saarani Mohamad.
Yesterday, Zahid called for calm over the Federal Court’s decision, saying Najib’s “fighting spirit” still burned strong though he was in prison.
Zahid had also called on Umno leaders to attend a special briefing at 2pm on Saturday.
Najib was taken to Kajang Prison on Tuesday evening to serve his 12-year sentence shortly after the apex court’s decision.
He had been convicted on seven charges of abuse of power, money laundering and criminal breach of trust involving RM42 million in SRC funds. - FMT
